VHS’ Sidney Hollander Receives Rare All-State Vocal Jazz Recognition

Junior Sidney Hollander was chosen to perform at the NYSSMA All-State Festival in vocal jazz. He is one of only 20 to be selected to perform in the elite vocal jazz category. “I was excited when I learned that I had been chosen,” he said. “It was really good to hear. I’m not nervous. I’m excited to meet people and have a great experience.”

For the first time in several years, Valhalla High School will have a representative at the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Festival for vocal jazz. Junior Sidney Hollander will attend and participate in the festival, which features the best vocalists in New York State.

In November, Sidney will travel to Rochester to perform in the prestigious event. The All-State selection announcement was made in late-August.

“I was excited when I learned that I had been chosen,” he said. “It was really good to hear. I’m not nervous. I’m excited to meet people and have a great experience.”

Sidney was selected to participate in All-State due to his NYSSMA score, which showed that his skills were at the highest level. He is one of only 20 to be selected to perform in the elite vocal jazz category.

“It’s a unique opportunity to do something special,” said Scott Rimm-Hewitt, Valhalla Middle School’s Director of Bands. “He will be performing alongside other passionate and talented jazz singers.”

Sidney first excelled in singing after trying out for the vocal ensemble in seventh grade. No stranger to instruments, he is also an accomplished trumpeter, for which he has received numerous accolades. Additionally, he plays the French horn, trombone and piano.

In addition to Sidney, senior Brandon Ferrante was selected as an alternate for the NYSSMA All-State Festival in vocal jazz.
